Frequently Asked Questions?
Is it difficult to get in?

We typically consist of 12 – 16 singers. As such, our group is highly competitive and often attracts more qualified singers than we have room for. However, we highly encourage everyone to audition because you never know what we’re looking for in any given year!

What’s the time commitment?

We rehearse 2-3 times a week for a total of 6 hours. These times are subject to change based on our current group’s schedules and extra rehearsals are added leading up to concerts and during competition season. Nonetheless, many members in our group are involved in multiple clubs across campus, as well as Greek Life!

Do you compete?

Yes! Naked Voices is the only A Cappella group at UCSB that competes in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), a global competition showcasing student A Cappella from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This event is run by Varsity Vocals and operates on the bracket system (similar to sports!). Naked Voices has competed for a number of years, but we determine if we will compete at the beginning of each year with the input of our newest members! Historically, we have scored well, receiving numerous awards!

While we understand that competition sounds scary, it is incredibly fun and rewarding! We see competition as an amazing opportunity to network across a number of college campuses, develop our vocal skillsets, and gain invaluable insight into the diverse world of A Cappella.

What do you look for in singers?

What we are looking for changes every year and depends on a variety of factors! Due to the nature of competition, our singers are eager and demonstrate high musicianship, confidence, and vocal ability.

Is it fun?

Yes! Naked offers a fun and rewarding experience for anyone who loves to sing. The challenging music we perform will refine your vocal abilities and help you grow as a musician. Our group is supportive and welcoming, and we spend a lot of time together, both in and out of rehearsals. If you’re passionate about singing and looking for a family at UCSB, Naked Voices is the perfect fit for you.

Are you looking for beatboxers?

Yes! We are always looking for beatboxers (Vocal Percussionists). Please include this information on your audition sign-up form, even if you’re just starting out or wanting to learn!

What is the audition process?

Our audition process happens at the beginning of every fall quarter. In the initial audition, you are asked to sing (obviously) a 1-1.5 minute section of your favorite song (A Cappella, of course!) and show off your voice. Although we love all music genres, we don’t recommend picking classical or musical theatre songs for your audition. Additionally, we’ll have you sing scales going up and down to get a feel for your range! If you can beatbox, please also prepare a 30 second demonstration showcasing what you can do (this can be A Cappella or you may accompany a song of your choice).

If given a callback, you will be asked to prepare a second song to perform for us and demonstrate your stage presence! We will also split you into designated voice parts, where you will sing one of our songs in various small groups. This is to test your blend and give us insight into how you learn music!

Following callbacks, our group will deliberate and decide on our newest members! This is the hardest part of our audition process as there is so much talent to choose from, so please be patient! Everyone will receive a decision, so don’t worry!

Can I hire you for an event?

Yes! We are happy to perform for events, both on and off campus. Please reach out via email or Instagram and include any relevant information. We are happy to negotiate prices and guarantee a stellar performance!

What if I don’t make it in?

If you don’t get a spot in Naked this year, please consider auditioning for other groups! UCSB is home to a total of SIX A Cappella groups that would love to hear you: Naked Voices, Intervals, Vocal Motion (VoMo), Ravaani, Brothas From Other Mothas (BFOM), and Trebled Waters! We highly encourage you to audition for every group that you can!

Why do you perform without shoes?
